Pick your hotel and you have picked your Singapore. Raffles is the colonial original, all suites and Long Bar ritual. Capella hides on Sentosa in actual jungle quiet. Marina Bay Sands is the postcard, and yes, the rooftop pool is worth it once. They are twenty minutes apart and belong to different centuries.
Eat where the city eats. Hawker centres here hold Michelin listings, and a guided crawl through the stalls, ending with satay at Lau Pa Sat as the office towers empty, beats any hotel tasting menu for the money. Then walk it off in Tiong Bahru's 1930s art deco streets or Joo Chiat's tiled Peranakan shophouses. The Supertrees light up at 7.45 each evening; the National Orchid Garden is the quieter, better morning.

- Any month. Equatorial and steady, with brief afternoon storms that clear as fast as they arrive.

- Two to three nights does it honestly as a stopover. Longer only if you are working or house-hunting.

- Even six hours at Changi earns a walk to the Jewel waterfall. We plan around it deliberately.
