United Arab Emirates

Dubai

Winter sun seven hours from London, and the most useful stopover on the map. The trick is knowing which Dubai you are booking, because there are at least three.

The consultant's view

Start With the Season, Not the Skyline

From October to April, Dubai is one of the easiest wins in travel: reliable warmth, short flight, no jet lag worth naming. From June to August it is a different city at well over 40 degrees, and life moves entirely indoors. We will say so plainly if your dates fall in the wrong half, and steer the trip somewhere better, even if that somewhere is not Dubai.

The version most visitors miss is the desert. Al Maha sits inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, where oryx wander past your private pool deck and falconry happens at dawn. One night there against two or three downtown changes the whole memory of the trip. In town, the choice runs from the old-guard beachfront calm of One&Only Royal Mirage to the full statement of Atlantis The Royal, with the Bulgari on Jumeira Bay for clients who prefer their luxury quiet.

And leave a morning for the city that was here first: an abra across the Creek for a few dirhams, the gold and spice souks of Deira, then the galleries of Alserkal Avenue if you want a Dubai nobody puts on a postcard.

Best months
October to April. February for guaranteed pool weather without peak pricing.
Avoid
June to August unless the whole point is spa, mall and air conditioning.
The insider night
Al Maha in the conservation reserve: dune drive, falcons at first light, dinner under stars.
Good for
Winter sun, stopovers breaking the London to Asia or Australia run, business trips.

How we book it

Stopover, Escape or Base

The stopover

Two or three nights breaking a long-haul east. We time the arrival transfer to the minute, because a stopover wasted on logistics is not a stopover.

The winter week

A downtown or beachfront base, one desert evening away from the crowds, and the restaurant bookings made before the trip, not during it.

The business trip

Rooms placed for DIFC or Media City rather than for the brochure photo, booked to policy with the return leg protected. See corporate travel.
